Caring for older adults requires an understanding of the physical, emotional and everyday changes associated with ageing. This six-month programme introduces learners to the fundamentals of geriatric care while building knowledge across elderly health, nutrition, nursing, personal assistance and psychosocial support.
The course also incorporates practical components, allowing learners to complement theoretical knowledge with practical learning in geriatric care.
The Certified Skill Diploma in Geriatric Care is suited to learners who want to develop structured knowledge and practical understanding of caring for older adults. It can be relevant for those interested in developing skills in elderly care, personal assistance, geriatric nursing support and related care services.
By the end of the programme, learners should be able to:
Build knowledge of ageing, gerontology and the changing physical and psychological needs of older adults.
Develop an understanding of common diseases, disorders and nutritional considerations associated with ageing.
Gain exposure to essential areas such as hygiene, feeding, toileting, mobility and bedridden care.
Understand dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety and psychosocial support.
Develop practical listening, speaking and writing skills for real-life situations.
Connect theoretical learning with the practical components included in the curriculum.
Geriatric care is learned by doing. Alongside classroom sessions, the programme focuses on connecting what is taught to the real responsibilities involved in supporting an older adult – how to assist safely, how to observe carefully, and how to communicate with patience.
Guided practice of everyday care tasks such as personal care, positioning and safe assistance.
Working through real caregiving conversations - reassurance, consent, and family updates.
Recognising risk, preventing avoidable harm and knowing when to escalate to a clinician.
An internship is included as part of the programme, giving learners practical exposure to elderly-care environments alongside their studies. Internship placement details, duration and scheduling are confirmed by the Academy.
Explore career opportunities in elderly care across home care, residential care, and healthcare support settings.
